At the invitation of Prof. Zhang Jian from the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics, Prof. Luo Min of “Hundred Talents Program” from the Ocean College of Zhejiang University and doctoral supervisor gave an academic seminar entitled “Numerical simulation and experimental research of wave slamming” in Meeting Room 908 of Leisi Building in the afternoon of 21 May 2021. The seminar attracted many teachers and students from Faculty of Civil Engineering and Mechanics as well as the Research Center of Fluid Machinery Engineering and Technology.

First, Prof. Luo introduced the severe impact on the structure under the slamming of disastrous waves, among which the destructive force of freak wave was especially great, and caused the damage and instability of some offshore platforms. Wave slamming involves multiphase coupling factors such as wave breaking, aeration and hydroelasticity. Therefore, it is necessary to explore a method that can accurately simulate large-deformation breaking waves and slamming pressure for prediction and evaluation. Secondly, a new meshless method named the Consistent Particle Method (CPM) was introduced. Adopting the Generalized Finite Difference (GFD) scheme to compute spatial derivatives in a way consistent with Taylor series expansion, this particle method eliminates the use of kernel function in computing derivatives and hence, improves the numerical accuracy. Finally, Prof. Luo showed the experimental device for three-dimensional sloshing and freak wave slamming of fixed and floating platform structures, organically combining numerical simulation and physical model experiments to reveal the fluid-structure interactions and provide a theoretical basis for marine structure design.

After the report, teachers and students conducted in-depth discussions and exchanges on related academic issues with Prof. Luo. The academic atmosphere was very grumous.
