On Oct. 27, 2011, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) officially named Dr. Fuh-Gwo Yuan as Samuel P. Langley Professor in the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NIA.
Professor Yuan is an internationally renowned expert in the field of structural health monitoring, fracture and life prediction of advanced materials and structures, smart materials and structures, and damage tolerance of composite structures. Dr. Yuan holds a Ph.D. (1986) and M.S. (1981) in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He earned a B.S. in Engineering Science at National Cheng-Kung University in Taiwan in 1977. He is now an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society for Composites (ASC).
Professor Yuan brings more than two decades of experience collaborating with NASA Langley Research Center scientists and engineers to his new role as Langley Professor. His research has played a major role toward the advancement of structural health monitoring systems and the understanding of damage tolerance of composite materials and structures.
Our faculty has established good academic relationship with NCSU for a long time. As the chair professor of our faculty, Prof. Yuan’ great achievements on the structural health monitoring and damage tolerance of composite structures will promote the further development of our faculty’s relevant research fields.
