On the morning of May 10, 2023, Jian Qu, professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Energy and Power Engineering, was invited to the Institute to give an academic report titled “Boiling and Condensation Phase Change Heat Transfer” in Conference Room 414 of Leisi Building. Professor Zhu Jianguo, director of the Institute of Structural Health Management Research Institute, and some teachers and graduate students listened to the report.

The report was hosted by Dean Zhu Jianguo, who firstly expressed his warm welcome to professor Qu and gave a detailed introduction of professor Qu's research direction and research results achieved. Prof. Qu firstly made a detailed exposition on the concept of phase change heat transfer at solid-liquid interface and several typical classifications of boiling heat transfer, introduced the definition of contact angle and commonly used contact angle models, as well as how to carry out micro- and nano-scale bionic design based on superhydrophobic surfaces such as lotus leaves and cicada wings. Then, he focused on the saturated boiling curve of a large vessel in detail, including what is the critical heat flow density, how to regulate and monitor it in practical engineering to protect the wall from high temperature damage, and revealed the physical mechanism of the leidenfrost effect, which explains the physical nature behind some peculiar phenomena in life. Professor Qu also discussed how to construct superhydrophobic surfaces using bead condensation, and introduced some typical engineering applications, such as thermal protection structures and engineered heat exchangers.

Professor Qu's report was clear, vivid, in-depth, and the content of the report aroused the strong interest of the attending teachers and students, who had extensive exchanges and discussions with Professor Qu. Professor Qu's professional rigor, friendly and easy-going personality charisma also left a deep impression on the teachers and students present. Finally, President Zhu expressed his thanks to Professor Qu for his wonderful report, pointed out that this activity is inspiring for the future research work on non-destructive testing with infrared imaging, and encouraged everyone to pay more attention to the knowledge outside the research field to broaden the academic horizons, as well as expanding the circle of communication and strengthening cooperation and exchanges.
